Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 2, 2026
This policy explains what information The Modern Slave (“we”, “us”) collects when you visit themodernslave.com, how it is used, and the choices you have. We keep this simple: we don’t sell products directly, we don’t take payments, and we don’t ask you to create an account.
1. Who we are
The Modern Slave is an independent blog about work, pay and the cost of living, with a curated list of products we link to on Amazon. Questions about this policy can be sent to info@themodernslave.com.
2. Affiliate disclosure (Amazon Associates)
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. When you click a “Check price on Amazon” button or another Amazon link on this site, you leave our site and go to Amazon.com. That link carries our Associates tracking ID, and Amazon may set a cookie in your browser so it can credit us with a commission if you buy something. The commission comes out of Amazon’s share — it never changes the price you pay.
We do not receive your name, address, payment details or what you personally bought. Amazon reports only aggregated order totals to us. What happens on Amazon is governed by Amazon’s Privacy Notice.
3. Information we collect
Information you give us. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to write. We use it only to reply.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, we and the services below collect technical data when you visit: IP address, browser and device type, operating system, referring page, pages viewed, time on page, approximate location (city/country level derived from IP), and which links you click (including clicks to Amazon).
4. Services we use
- Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager — measure visits, traffic sources and link clicks so we know which articles and products are useful. Google may set cookies such as
_ga. See how Google uses data from sites that use its services. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on. - Microsoft Clarity — records how visitors scroll, click and move around pages (session replays and heatmaps) so we can fix confusing layouts. Clarity masks sensitive text by default and does not capture what you type into form fields. Clarity and Microsoft Advertising use cookies to collect this data. See the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
- Amazon Associates — described in section 2.
- SiteGround (hosting) — our web host keeps standard server logs (IP address, request, time, browser) for security and troubleshooting.
- WordPress and WooCommerce — the software this site runs on. They may set short-lived functional cookies (for example, to remember a preference). We don’t run a checkout, so no payment or shipping data is collected here.
- Google Fonts — fonts may be loaded from Google’s servers, which receive your IP address to deliver them.
- Social links — links to Instagram, Facebook and other platforms are ordinary links. Once you’re on those platforms, their own privacy policies apply.
5. How we use information
- To run, secure and improve the site.
- To understand which articles and product recommendations people find useful.
- To receive affiliate commissions for purchases made through our links.
- To reply to messages you send us.
We do not sell your personal information for money, and we do not build individual profiles to sell to anyone.
6. Cookies and your choices
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. The ones involved here fall into three groups:
- Necessary — set by WordPress so pages load and work properly. They cannot be switched off from here, and they do not follow you to other sites.
- Analytics — set by Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to count visits, show which articles get read, and record how pages are scrolled and clicked. Blocking these costs you nothing; it only means your visit is not counted.
- Affiliate — set by Amazon once you follow a link to their site, so that a purchase can be credited to us. Blocking these does not change the price you pay; it only means we earn nothing from it.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, use a private window, or install a tracker blocker. Blocking cookies won’t stop the site from working, though our analytics and affiliate tracking may not record your visit. Many browsers also send a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal; you can enable it in your browser.
7. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas and other US states, or the EU/UK), you may have the right to:
- know what personal information we hold about you and request a copy;
- ask us to correct or delete it;
- opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and of targeted advertising;
- not be treated differently for exercising these rights.
Because analytics and affiliate cookies can count as “sharing” under some state laws, you can opt out at any time by blocking cookies as described above, enabling Global Privacy Control, or emailing us. To make a request, email info@themodernslave.com. We may need to confirm the request is from you, and we’ll respond within the time the law requires (normally 45 days in the US, one month in the EU/UK).
Do Not Track: there is no common standard for browser “Do Not Track” signals, so the site does not respond to them; we do honour Global Privacy Control where the law requires it.
8. How long we keep information
Analytics data is kept according to the retention settings of each service (for Google Analytics, the retention period chosen in its settings, between 2 and 14 months; Clarity keeps session recordings for about 30 days). Emails are kept only as long as needed to handle the conversation. Hosting logs are kept by SiteGround for a limited period for security.
9. Children
This site is written for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us information, email us and we’ll delete it.
10. International visitors
The site is operated from the United States, and the services above may process data in the US and other countries.
11. Security
The site uses HTTPS, and we keep its software up to date. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we collect as little as we can to limit the risk.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we’ll update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be noted on the site.
